This year is a historic year for The Transitional Learning Center (TLC) at Galveston. 2007 marks TLC's 25th year of assisting individuals with traumatic or acquired brain injury regain their independence. Founded in Galveston in 1982 by philanthropist, Robert L. Moody, Sr. after his son suffered a debilitating brain injury in an auto accident. Robert Moody recognized the lack of services for individuals who had suffered a brain injury and a need for comprehensive post acute brain injury services. Since 1982, TLC has specialized solely in post acute brain injury rehabilitation and served nearly 2000 individuals with acquired or traumatic brain injury.

A Brief History
1982-1998: Pioneering Postacute Brain Injury Rehabilitation
In 1982 Robert L. Moody establishes TLC. Initially a 16 bed facility, TLC expands to 22 beds in 1984 and alters the mission to include the provision of comprehensive rehabilitation services from a psychosocial model adding physical therapy, speech therapy, pulmonary, occupational therapy and vocational services. In 1988 TLC opens a community based augmented apartment trial.
1998-2004: Expanding the Mission
Recognizing a growing need for long-term supported living services for individuals with acquired brain injury, TLC opens TideWay Lodge, an 8 bed facility on the West End of Galveston Island. The Transitional Learning Community officially changes its name to The Transitional Learning Center.
