From the very first day, we realized that TLC and the TideWay program was a family.
Families take great pride in providing care to a loved one with a brain or a spinal cord injury so they can remain at home. Caregiving can be a source of great joy. However, research demonstrates that caregiving, particularly after moderate to severe brain injury or spinal cord injury, can be difficult as well. Studies have demonstrated that as many as 60% of caregivers experience stress, depressed mood, and health consequences as compared to non-care givers. Caregiving can also put a strain on family relationships and marriages. The physical, emotional and financial consequences for providing care in the home can be overwhelming without some support.
TLC’s long-term supported care program provides respite services for adults with moderate to severe acquired brain injuries and spinal cord injuries. Respite care is generally planned, short-term, and time limited. Respite services are provided so families can take a break from caregiving in order to take a vacation, remodel the home, etc. The Transitional Learning Center provides two facilities that offer respite care for neurobehavioral and spinal cord injuries that need supported care. TideWay is a 32-bed facility that offers nearly 40 thousand square feet of living and activity space. Tideway is located in the heart of Galveston Island, Texas. WestWay offers a unique home-like environment that is located in Lubbock, Texas.
Services offered during the respite stay include:
- 24-hour supervision
- Nutritional meals and snacks (including modified or special diets as needed)
- Medication administration and monitoring
- Provision of activities of daily living (i.e., bathing, grooming, toileting, feeding)
A minimum of 4 hours of structured activities daily:
- Arts and crafts
- Table games
- Trips into the community for various community-based activities
If you or you know someone who is interested in respite services at TideWay or WestWay the first step in the process is contacting TLC’s Admissions Department at 409-797-1455. The staff in the Admissions Department will gather some information about your loved-one and arrange for a tour of Tideway or WestWay facility and a screening of your loved one. The tour allows you to see the facility and meet the staff in order to determine if TideWay or WestWay is a good match for your loved one. The screening allows the staff to understand the needs and preferences of your loved one, and how to best provide care and an activity schedule during the respite stay. These services, the tour and screening, are free and are offered without obligation on your part.
